What does God look like?
It is a normal, and very human trait, to want a physical portrait of God. This is why we have so many idols, saints, and images depicting the “world-we-cannot-see”. Everyone wants something tangible to grasp, to cling to, when in-need. It seems God has deemed reality to be quite the opposite though – not being physical as-we-know-it (nor being ethereal) – true to His nature, because ethereal things have no connection to the physical world, but God does manifest himself in the physical world (in almost ethereal ways). How? In a still-small-voice, or by touching our emotions (and then there is healing in our bodies, minds, and spirits).
We don’t need a picture of our loved-ones, in order to love and cherish them. They are alive within us always, and so it is with God. When we love someone, we want to spend as much time with them as we can. God knows that this is too much to ask, or expect, of others. We need our own space, and involvement in various other aspects of life. But we have a tendency to attribute human traits to God. A perspective which is so far-removed from the truth, it borders on ridiculous. If humans could be God-like, we couldn’t stand being around each other. But to be around God, is wonderful! I just don’t get why we try to bring God down to our level. It’s like trying to make an elephant fit into an ant’s world. It can’t be done! What would be the benefit anyway?
I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I need God, just as God is. Without my present understanding of God, I would not reach for more. I would not find change naturally occurring in me. I would not have a means of putting things into perspective. I would not have any peace in my soul.
I believe that the concepts of God, in the world today, are so clouded with humanistic bull-shit, that no one cares to think of God at all, until they have a crisis. Then they rattle their picture, or book, hoping the man-like God will save them.
The reality is that God makes Himself known.
If I have eyes to see, and ears to hear, I will understand.
